Tips for best results
- Quick estimate: double °C and add 30.
Where Fahrenheit is still used
Most of the world measures temperature in Celsius, but the United States, some Caribbean nations and a few Pacific territories still use Fahrenheit for weather, cooking and medicine. If you read US recipes, weather apps or medical advice, converting quickly avoids mistakes – especially with oven temperatures.
Handy reference points
0 °C = 32 °F (freezing), 20 °C = 68 °F (room temperature), 37 °C = 98.6 °F (normal body temperature), 100 °C = 212 °F (boiling at sea level), and 180 °C ≈ 356 °F, the most common oven setting. The quick estimate “double it and add 30” is accurate within a few degrees for everyday weather.
Body temperature
A normal body temperature is around 36.5–37.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F). A fever is generally considered 38 °C (100.4 °F) or higher.
°C to °F with the working shown
Type a temperature in Celsius and get Fahrenheit immediately, with the calculation written out using your number – °F = 37 × 1.8 + 32 = 98.6 – and the same temperature in Kelvin. Swap to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius. Below the converter you'll find a reference chart from −40 °C to 250 °C and the temperatures people look up most: fever, weather, cooking and ovens.
The formula
°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 (× 1.8, then add 32).
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9 (subtract 32, then divide by 1.8).
K = °C + 273.15.
Why 9/5 and 32? Water freezes at 0 °C = 32 °F and boils at 100 °C = 212 °F. The 100 Celsius degrees between those points span 180 Fahrenheit degrees, so one Celsius degree is 1.8 Fahrenheit degrees, and the scales are offset by 32.
Mental-math shortcut
Double it and add 30. 20 °C → 40 + 30 = 70 °F (exact 68). It is within 2–3 °F for everyday weather between 0 and 30 °C. For the reverse, subtract 30 and halve: 80 °F → 50 ÷ 2 = 25 °C (exact 26.7). A handy rhyme for weather: 'Thirty is hot, twenty is nice, ten is chilly, zero is ice.'

Body temperature
A normal body temperature is around 37 °C (98.6 °F), although healthy values vary between about 36.1 and 37.2 °C (97 to 99 °F) depending on the person, the time of day and where it is measured. A temperature of 38 °C (100.4 °F) or above is generally considered a fever. Always follow medical advice for your situation; this converter only translates the numbers.
Oven temperatures and gas marks
| Gas mark | °C | °F (approx.) | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 140 | 275 | Very low |
| 2 | 150 | 300 | Low |
| 3 | 170 | 325 | Moderately low |
| 4 | 180 | 350 | Moderate |
| 5 | 190 | 375 | Moderately hot |
| 6 | 200 | 400 | Hot |
| 7 | 220 | 425 | Hot |
| 8 | 230 | 450 | Very hot |
| 9 | 240 | 475 | Very hot |
Recipes usually round oven temperatures: 180 °C is printed as 350 °F (exact 356 °F). For fan (convection) ovens, reduce the temperature by about 20 °C (25 °F).
Who uses which scale?
Almost every country uses Celsius for weather, cooking and medicine. The United States, its territories, and a few other countries such as the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands and Liberia use Fahrenheit for everyday temperatures. Scientists everywhere use Celsius and Kelvin. The Kelvin scale starts at absolute zero, the lowest possible temperature, and uses the same step size as Celsius; it has no degree symbol – you write 300 K, not 300 °K.
Weather forecasts while travelling
If you travel between the US and the rest of the world, it helps to memorise a few anchor points: 10 °C = 50 °F (jacket weather), 20 °C = 68 °F (pleasant), 25 °C = 77 °F (warm), 30 °C = 86 °F (hot) and 40 °C = 104 °F (extreme heat). For cold weather, remember that −18 °C is about 0 °F and −40 is the same on both scales.
