Tips for best results

Owner vs user passwords

PDFs can have an open password (needed to view) and permissions passwords that restrict printing, copying or editing. When you know the password, unlocking removes the protection so you can work with the file normally.

Legal and safe use

Only unlock documents you own or are authorised to access, such as your own bank statements, utility bills or payslips. After unlocking, store the file securely – it no longer has protection.

After unlocking

Once the password is removed, you can merge the file with other documents, compress it, add page numbers or print it without being asked for the password each time.

Remove a PDF password in seconds

Typing a password every time you open your own bank statement or payslip gets old fast. Fileopia removes the password so the file opens directly – provided you know it. The PDF is decrypted inside your browser and saved as a normal, unprotected copy. Neither the file nor the password is uploaded.

Many PDFs also have an owner password that does not stop you opening the file but blocks printing, copying text or editing. Those restrictions can usually be removed without entering any password: just leave the field blank.

What this unlocker does

Only unlock files you are allowed to

Use this tool for your own documents or files whose owner has given you the password. It does not crack or guess unknown passwords. Removing protection from documents you are not authorised to access may break the law or a contract, so please respect the wishes of the document's author.

How to unlock a PDF

Unlocking on different devices

Because the tool runs in a web page, it works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebooks, Android and iPhone in the same way. On a Mac you can also open a PDF in Preview, enter the password and export without encryption; in Chrome you can open the PDF, enter the password and 'Print → Save as PDF', though that may flatten links and forms. This tool keeps the original structure intact.

Read-only and restricted PDFs

A 'read-only' PDF usually has an owner password with editing disabled. Leave the password blank and unlock it to edit with Edit PDF, fill it with Fill PDF Form or reorganise it with Organize PDF. If a file is 'read-only' because it is a scan, it has no text to edit – run OCR PDF first.
