How to: Image to ASCII Art
- Upload an image.
- Adjust width, characters, contrast and colour.
- Copy the ASCII art or download it as TXT or HTML.
ASCII art recreates an image with ordinary text characters, using dense symbols like @ and # for dark areas and light ones like dots for bright areas. It is a fun way to make banners for terminals and code, retro-style graphics and creative social posts. Upload a picture, set the width and character set, and copy the result.
Common uses
- Create banners for command-line tools, logs and code comments.
- Decorate README files and developer documentation.
- Make retro text graphics for posts, profiles and newsletters.
- Turn logos into text art for email signatures in monospaced fonts.
Tips for best results
- High-contrast images with simple shapes convert best.
- Use 60–100 characters wide for code comments and chats.
- Increase contrast for faces and photos.
- Tick invert when the art will be shown on a dark background.
How it works
The image is scaled to the chosen number of columns, and the brightness of each pixel is mapped to a character from the selected set, from light to dark. The detailed set uses about 70 characters for smooth shading, while the blocks set uses Unicode shading blocks for a pixel-art look.
Colour ASCII
With colour output each character takes the colour of its pixel, creating a striking HTML file that you can open in any browser. The plain text version is included as a second download.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I use ASCII art
Plain ASCII art works in code comments, README files, terminal banners, emails in monospaced fonts, forum posts in code blocks and chat apps that support code formatting.
Why does it look stretched
Characters are about twice as tall as they are wide, so the converter uses half as many rows as columns. View the art in a monospaced font to keep the proportions.
Is Image to ASCII Art really free?
Yes. Every tool on Fileopia is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Fileopia processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Fileopia works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
