Tips for best results

Percent vs percentage points

If an interest rate rises from 4% to 5%, it has gone up by 1 percentage point – but by 25% in relative terms. News reports and financial statements mix these up surprisingly often. The calculator shows both, so you can quote figures correctly in reports, presentations and articles.

Mental shortcuts

10% of any number moves the decimal point one place left; 5% is half of that; 1% moves it two places. So 15% of 80 is 8 + 4 = 12. Also, X% of Y always equals Y% of X: 8% of 50 is the same as 50% of 8, which is 4. These tricks help you check that the calculator's answer is in the right ballpark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate percentage change

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25% increase.

Why is a 50% drop not reversed by a 50% rise

Percentages apply to different bases. 100 falls 50% to 50, but 50 must rise 100% to get back to 100.
