How to: Dark Mode PDF
- Select a PDF.
- Choose dark, black, night, sepia or grey theme and quality.
- Download a dark-mode copy to read on any device.
Bright white PDF pages are tiring to read at night or in a dark room. This converter creates a dark-mode copy of your document: text becomes light on a dark background while colours keep their hue, so charts and highlights stay recognisable. Photos can be kept in natural colours, and themes for OLED black, warm night reading, sepia paper and soft grey are included.
Common uses
- Read e-books, papers and reports at night without eye strain.
- Put a dark copy on an e-reader or tablet that lacks a dark mode.
- Reduce screen brightness glare on long study sessions.
- Save battery on OLED phones with the pure black theme.
Tips for best results
- Use “Night” for late reading – amber light has less blue.
- Choose “Standard” quality for text-heavy books to keep files small.
- Convert only the chapters you need with a page range.
- Keep the original PDF for printing.
Smart colour inversion
A simple negative turns red into cyan and blue into orange. This tool inverts lightness instead: dark text becomes light, the white page becomes near-black, but each colour keeps its hue, so a red heading stays red and a blue link stays blue. The dark theme uses a very dark grey rather than pure black, which many people find more comfortable.
Keeping photos natural
Inverted photos look strange. When “Keep photos in natural colours” is ticked, the tool finds the area of each embedded image on the page and restores its original colours after recolouring the page.
Private conversion
Pages are rendered and recoloured with pdf.js in your browser. The PDF is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still select text
No. Each page is recoloured as an image, so the dark copy is for reading only. Keep the original for searching, copying or printing.
Why not just use my reader's dark mode
Many PDF readers, e-readers and phone apps have no dark mode, and some only darken the interface, not the pages. A dark-mode copy looks the same in every app and on every device.
