How to: Emoji Picker

  1. Search by name (e.g. “heart” or “party”) or browse a category.
  2. Click an emoji to copy it, or add several to build a string.
  3. Paste it anywhere – your recent emoji are kept for next time.

Desktop computers make emoji surprisingly awkward: shortcuts differ between Windows and Mac, and many apps have no picker at all. Fileopia’s emoji picker lets you search more than 1,300 emoji by their official Unicode names, browse by category, copy any one with a click, or build a string of several to paste at once. Your recently used emoji are remembered in your browser, so favourites are always one click away.

Tips for best results

What emoji really are

Emoji are standard text characters defined by the Unicode Consortium, just like letters. Each has a code point and an official name, such as U+1F600 “grinning face”. Because they are text, they can be copied, pasted, searched and stored anywhere text goes. Your device draws them using its emoji font, which is why the same character looks different on an iPhone, an Android phone or a Windows PC.

Skin tones, flags and combined emoji

Some emoji are sequences of several code points joined together. Skin-tone variants add a modifier to a base emoji; families and professions combine people and objects with an invisible joiner; flags combine two regional-indicator letters. If a device does not support a combination, it shows the separate parts instead. The picker focuses on the core set that displays correctly on almost every modern system.

Emoji and accessibility

Screen readers announce emoji by their names, so “🎉🎉🎉” is read as “party popper, party popper, party popper”. Use emoji to add tone rather than to replace words, avoid long strings in the middle of sentences, and place them at the end of a line where possible. In hashtags and usernames, emoji can make content harder to find and read aloud.
