- Share ID documents with a password sent separately.

Tips for best results

How PDF encryption works
AES-256 is the strongest encryption defined in the PDF standard and is supported by Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, macOS Preview and modern mobile viewers. Without the password, the content cannot be read.
Choosing a strong password
Use at least 12–16 characters mixing words, numbers and symbols. A passphrase like “Coffee-Window-42-Orbit” is both strong and memorable. Never send the password in the same email as the file.
Works offline
Encryption happens in your browser, so you can protect files even without an internet connection once the page has loaded.
Lock your PDF with strong encryption
A password-protected PDF can only be opened by someone who knows the password. Fileopia encrypts your file with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption and the default recommended by the current PDF specification (ISO 32000-2). Some popular online tools advertise AES-128; AES-256 is supported by every modern reader, including Adobe Acrobat, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, macOS Preview and mobile apps. If you must support very old software, you can switch to AES-128.
Encryption happens inside your browser. The unprotected document and the password never leave your device – there is no server that could log them, and nothing to delete after an hour.
Choose what readers may do
- Open password – required to view the document at all.
- Allow printing – untick to block printing in compliant readers.
- Allow copying – untick to stop text and images being copied out.
- Allow editing – untick to prevent changes and page reorganisation.
- Allow comments & form filling – keep forms usable while locking everything else.
- Owner password – a second password that unlocks the restrictions for you, while recipients keep the limited rights.
- Strength meter – see instantly whether your password is weak or strong; generate one with our Password Generator.
- Batch – protect several PDFs with the same settings and download a ZIP.
How PDF password protection works
When you protect a PDF, every text, image and font stream in the file is encrypted with a key derived from your password. Without the password the content is unreadable bytes. Permission settings (print, copy, edit) are stored alongside and honoured by standard PDF readers; they are a policy rather than unbreakable protection, so for truly confidential material rely on the open password and keep it secret.
| Setting | What it protects |
|---|---|
| Open (user) password | Nobody can view the file without it |
| Owner password | Lets you change or remove restrictions |
| Permissions | Tell readers whether printing, copying or editing is allowed |
Choosing a good password
- Use at least 12 characters, mixing upper and lower case, numbers and symbols – or four random words.
- Never reuse a password from your e-mail or bank.
- Send the password through a different channel than the file – for example, the PDF by e-mail and the password by SMS or phone.
- Store it in a password manager; a lost password cannot be recovered by anyone, including us.
How to password-protect a PDF
- Drop your PDF (or several).
- Type the password twice and check the strength indicator.
- Optionally open Permissions to restrict printing, copying or editing and set an owner password.
- Click Protect and download the encrypted PDF.
Common uses
- Sending payslips, tax returns and bank statements by e-mail.
- Sharing contracts and HR documents with candidates.
- Distributing exam papers or answer keys.
- Protecting client reports and medical records.
- Locking finished e-books against easy copying.

Frequently asked questions
How strong is the encryption?
Files are encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption.
How secure is PDF password protection?
With AES-256 and a strong password, the content cannot practically be read without the password. Use 12+ characters and keep it secret.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. Encryption runs in your browser; the password and file never leave your device.
Can I stop people printing or copying my PDF?

What if I forget the password?
It cannot be recovered – keep it in a password manager. Keep an unprotected original in a safe place.
Will every PDF reader open it?
Yes. AES-256 is supported by Acrobat, browsers, Preview and mobile apps. Choose AES-128 only for very old software.
Can I protect several PDFs at once?
Yes. Drop multiple files; all get the same password and settings, delivered as a ZIP.
