How to: Image Splitter

  1. Choose an image.
  2. Pick a grid (or custom rows and columns) and the tile shape.
  3. Download all tiles as a ZIP, numbered in posting order.

Splitting an image into tiles lets you post a seamless panorama carousel, create a giant grid on your Instagram profile, print a poster across several sheets or prepare sprites and puzzles. Fileopia’s image splitter cuts any picture into an exact grid of equal tiles, crops it to the right shape first, numbers the pieces in the order you need and packs them into a single ZIP. Everything is processed in your browser – the image is never uploaded.

Common uses

Tips for best results

How the cutting works

The splitter first decides the overall shape: columns × tile width by rows × tile height. If your image does not match that shape, it is centre-cropped so every tile is exactly the same size with no stretching. Each tile is then drawn from the original full-resolution pixels onto its own canvas and encoded in your chosen format. Because nothing is resized more than necessary, details stay sharp.

Panorama carousels

A 3×1 split turns a wide landscape into three posts that join seamlessly when people swipe through a carousel. Upload the tiles in left-to-right order in a single carousel post. For best results start with an image about 3:1 in shape; otherwise the splitter crops the top and bottom to fit. The same technique works for LinkedIn document posts and for wide banners on other platforms.

Printing large posters

To print a poster bigger than your printer’s paper, split the image into, say, 2 × 3 tiles and print each tile on its own page at full size. Trim the white margins and tape the sheets together from the back. Higher-resolution source images give better results; aim for at least 150 pixels per inch of finished size. The image to PDF tool on this site can combine the tiles into one printable document.

Frequently asked questions

What order are the tiles numbered in?

You choose: reading order (top-left first) or Instagram posting order, where file 1 is the bottom-right tile and should be posted first, so the grid assembles correctly on your profile.

Will the tiles lose quality?

Tiles are cut from the full-resolution original and saved at high quality; PNG is lossless.

How many tiles can I make?

Up to 20 × 20 (400 tiles).

Can I split vertically only?

Yes – set columns to 1 and choose the number of rows.

Does it work on phones?
