How to: Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price and discount.
- Add an extra discount or tax if needed.
- See the final price and how much you save.
Sales, coupons and promotions are designed to sound generous, but stacked discounts and taxes make the real price hard to judge. This calculator shows exactly what you will pay and how much you save, handles “extra 10% off sale prices”, and adds sales tax at checkout or works out the VAT already included in a price.
Common uses
- Check the real price during Black Friday, Boxing Day and seasonal sales.
- Compare a percentage discount with a fixed coupon.
- Set sale prices for your shop or online store.
- Work out VAT or GST included in a receipt total.
Tips for best results
- Compare the final price, not the percentage – a bigger discount on a higher price can still cost more.
- In the US and Canada tax is usually added at checkout; in the UK, EU, Australia and India it is typically included.
- Use the reverse calculation to check whether a “was/now” price is really a bargain.
- Track prices over time; some retailers raise prices before a sale.
Stacked discounts explained
When a store offers an extra discount on sale items, each discount applies to the result of the previous one. 40% off followed by an extra 20% off means you pay 60% × 80% = 48% of the original price, a 52% discount rather than 60%. The calculator shows this effective discount so there are no surprises at the till.
Tax added or included
Prices in North America usually exclude sales tax, which varies by state, province or city. Most other countries show prices including VAT or GST, often 5–27%. Choose “already included” to see how much of the price is tax – useful for business expense claims and VAT refunds for tourists.

Frequently asked questions
Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off
No. Stacked discounts multiply: 20% then 10% gives 28% off, because the second discount applies to the already reduced price.
How do I find the discount percentage
Use the reverse section: divide the sale price by the original price, subtract from 1 and multiply by 100.
