How to: OCR PDF

  1. Select your scanned PDF.
  2. Choose the document language(s).
  3. Download the searchable PDF.

A scanned PDF is just pictures of pages – you cannot search it or copy text. OCR (optical character recognition) reads the text and adds an invisible layer, so the PDF looks the same but becomes searchable. Unlike most OCR services, Fileopia does this on your device.

Common uses

Tips for best results

Make scans searchable and copyable

A scanned PDF is a stack of pictures: you cannot search it, copy a sentence from it or have a screen reader read it aloud. OCR (optical character recognition) reads the letters in those pictures and adds an invisible text layer exactly over them. The page looks the same, but now Ctrl+F finds words, text can be selected and copied, and the document can be indexed by your computer or a document management system.

Fileopia runs OCR with the Tesseract engine inside your browser. The language models are downloaded once and cached; your scans are never uploaded. That makes it suitable for medical records, legal files, invoices and ID documents.

What can I do with an OCR'd PDF?

Searchable PDF vs text file

A searchable PDF keeps the exact look of the original scan with selectable text underneath – ideal for archives and sharing. A TXT file contains only the words, without layout – ideal for pasting into other programs, translation or analysis. Choose 'both' if you need each.

Privacy of OCR in the browser

Many online OCR services send your scans to a server for processing. Here, the OCR engine and language data run on your own computer or phone. Once the page and language model have loaded, you can even disconnect from the internet and keep processing.

Speed and large documents

OCR is computationally heavy. A modern laptop typically handles a page in a few seconds; phones take longer. For a 200-page scan, use the page range to process it in chunks, or leave the tab open while it works – progress is shown per page.

OCR for right-to-left and Indian scripts

Arabic is recognised right-to-left and the text layer keeps the correct reading order, so search and copy work in Arabic-language readers. Hindi (Devanagari) and Tamil are supported with their own trained models, including conjunct characters and vowel signs. For mixed documents – an English form with Hindi names, for example – choose both languages so each word is matched against the right alphabet.

Frequently asked questions

Does the page look change?

No – the original page stays, an invisible text layer is added on top.

How long does it take?

About 2–6 seconds per page on a modern device. The first run downloads the language model (1–4 MB).

What does OCR PDF do?

It recognises text in scanned pages and adds an invisible text layer, so you can search, select and copy text while the page looks the same.

Is OCR free here?

Yes, completely – all languages, no page limits.

Which languages are supported?

English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Tamil, Simplified Chinese and Japanese; two can be combined.

Are my scans uploaded?

No. OCR runs in your browser.

Can I get the text as a file?

Yes. Choose TXT or 'Searchable PDF + TXT'.

Can I OCR only some pages?

Yes. Enter a page range, e.g. 1-5.

Does it work on handwriting?

Handwriting is generally not recognised reliably; printed text works best.

Why is OCR slow?

Text recognition is heavy computing done on your device. Use a page range or higher-powered device for big scans.
