Writing a number in words sounds trivial until you have to do it on a cheque, a contract or an invoice where a single slip can cause a payment to bounce. Fileopia’s number to words converter spells any amount correctly in plain English, shows the cheque-style wording for the most common currencies, and handles the Indian lakh/crore system as well as the international million/billion scale. Everything is calculated on your own device, so financial figures never leave your screen.

How English number words are built

English groups digits in threes. Each group is spelled as a number from one to nine hundred ninety-nine and followed by its scale word: thousand, million, billion, trillion and so on. Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen (forty-two), and the word “and” before the tens is optional – British English usually says “one hundred and five”, American English often drops it. The converter uses the hyphenated, “and”-free form, which is accepted everywhere and is the style most banks print.

International versus Indian numbering

In South Asia large amounts are grouped differently: after the first thousand the digits are grouped in twos, giving lakh (100,000) and crore (10,000,000). So 12,500,000 is “twelve million five hundred thousand” in the international system but “one crore twenty-five lakh” in the Indian system, written 1,25,00,000. Choose the system your reader expects; the digits line below the result is regrouped to match, which makes it easy to cross-check.

Writing amounts on cheques safely

Write the words as far left as possible, end with “only”, and draw a line through any remaining space so nothing can be added. If the words and the figures differ, most banks treat the words as the legal amount, so it pays to copy them exactly. For cents or pence, either spell them (“and forty-five cents”) or use the fraction style “and 45/100”, which is common on US cheques. Both versions are shown so you can pick the one your bank prefers.

Frequently asked questions

How large a number can it spell?

Up to 10^36 (decillions) in the international system and many crores in the Indian system. It uses exact big-integer maths, so even 30-digit numbers are spelled without rounding.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, the conversion runs entirely in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Is “one hundred and five” or “one hundred five” correct?

Both are correct. British and Commonwealth English normally include “and”; American usage often omits it. Banks accept either.

Yes – for whole positive numbers an ordinal line is shown, e.g. 21 → twenty-first, 100 → one hundredth.

Which currencies are supported for cheque wording?

US, Australian and Canadian dollars, euros, British pounds and Indian rupees, or no currency at all for neutral wording.
