How to: PDF Bookmark Editor
- Select a PDF – existing bookmarks are loaded as text.
- Edit lines as “Title
- page” and indent with two spaces to nest.
- Save and download the PDF with the new bookmarks.
Long reports, e-books, manuals and scanned documents are much easier to navigate with bookmarks, but most free tools cannot create them. This editor shows the bookmarks of your PDF as plain text, one per line with its page number. Rename entries, change pages, indent to create chapters and sections, add new ones or clear them all, then save.
Common uses
- Add a navigable table of contents to scanned books and reports.
- Fix wrong or missing bookmarks after merging PDFs.
- Create chapter bookmarks for e-books, theses and manuals.
- Remove messy auto-generated bookmarks before sharing.
Tips for best results
- Use “Add one bookmark per page” as a quick start, then rename the important pages.
- Indent with two spaces per level; three levels are usually enough.
- Keep titles short so they fit in the reader's sidebar.
- Use Split PDF by Bookmarks afterwards to split chapters into files.
The text format
Each line is one bookmark: the title, a vertical bar, then the page number, for example “Chapter 2 – Methods | 14”. Two leading spaces make a bookmark a child of the line above, four spaces a grandchild, and so on. Blank lines are ignored, and the editor reports the line number if a page is outside the document.
Opening with the bookmarks panel
When the option is ticked, the PDF asks readers to show the bookmarks panel automatically when the file opens, so readers notice the navigation immediately.
Nothing leaves your device
Reading and writing the outline happens in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib.
