Common uses

Tips for best results

What you can edit

Add new text anywhere – names, dates, notes, answers on forms – choose its size and colour, and cover unwanted content with white-out boxes. It is ideal for quick fixes when you do not have the original document.

Limitations

Existing text is not directly editable; cover it and type over it. For permanent removal of sensitive information, use Redact PDF.

A full PDF editor that never uploads your file

Most free online PDF editors are really annotation tools: they let you draw boxes on top of the page but not change the words that are already there. Others do edit text but send your document to a server and limit you to a few tasks an hour – Sejda, for example, allows 3 tasks per hour and 50 MB per file on its free tier. Fileopia is different on both counts. You can change existing text directly, and the whole editor runs inside your browser tab, so the document stays on your device and there is no hourly limit.

The editor opens your PDF with PDF.js, finds every text run along with its font, size and colour, and lets you click on any of them to type. When you save, the original text is removed and your new text is written back in a matching font, at the same position. Images, vector graphics and the rest of the page are left untouched, so the file looks just like it did – only with your changes.

What you can do

How to edit text in a PDF, step by step

How to add a text box, image or signature

Choose Add text and click where the new text should go. Type, then drag the box to fine-tune its position. For logos or photos choose the image option, pick a PNG or JPG and drag the corners to resize. A transparent PNG works best for stamps and signatures because the page shows through around it.

If you need a proper signature with initials and today's date on several pages, our dedicated Sign PDF tool is quicker: draw, type or upload a signature once and click to place it as many times as you need.

How to highlight, draw shapes and arrows

Choose Highlight & shapes, pick the shape from the list and drag on the page. Highlights are semi-transparent so the text underneath stays readable. Rectangles and ellipses are useful for drawing attention to a figure; arrows and lines point to details in drawings or screenshots; the freehand pen lets you circle, underline or annotate by hand – on a touch screen it works with a finger or stylus. Set the colour and line width before drawing. Every shape is written into the page as vector graphics, so it stays sharp at any zoom and prints exactly as you see it.

How to add clickable links

Choose Link, drag a rectangle over the words or image that should be clickable, and enter a web address such as https://example.com, an e-mail such as mailto:name@example.com, or a page number to jump inside the document. The link is saved as a standard PDF link annotation, so it works in Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, macOS Preview and mobile PDF viewers. This is handy for adding a booking link to a menu, a website to a flyer, or a table of contents to a long report.

How to remove or hide content

Use White-out to drag a white rectangle over anything you want gone – an old price, a personal number, a watermark-free area for new text. The covered content is removed from the page's text layer when saving, so it is not just visually hidden. For sensitive documents that must be redacted with black boxes, use our Redact PDF tool, which also removes the underlying text and images.

Editing scanned PDFs with OCR

A scanned page is a picture, so there is no text to click on. Run OCR from the editor first: it recognises the words on the page in your chosen language and turns them into editable text boxes positioned over the original. You can then correct, replace or white-out text as with any other PDF. For a searchable but otherwise unchanged copy of a scan, use OCR PDF.

Real-world things people use it for

Fonts and how close the match is

When you edit existing text, the editor tries to use the same font that is embedded in the PDF. If the PDF only contains a subset of a font (only the letters that were used), new letters may not exist in it; in that case the editor falls back to the closest standard font – serif, sans-serif or monospace – in the same weight and style. For most business documents in Arial, Helvetica, Times or Calibri the result is indistinguishable. You can always choose a different font from the toolbar.

Why a browser editor is safer

PDFs that people edit tend to be personal: tenancy agreements, salary slips, tax forms, medical reports, legal letters. Uploading them to a free website means trusting a company you know nothing about with that data. With Fileopia, the editor code is downloaded once and then works on your file locally. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and keep editing – proof that nothing is being sent. There is no account to create and no history stored on a server.

Tips for best results

Editing PDFs on a phone or tablet

The editor is fully touch-friendly. On an iPhone, iPad or Android device, tap a line of text to edit it with the on-screen keyboard, pinch to zoom, and use your finger or an Apple Pencil with the freehand pen to annotate. Because nothing is uploaded, editing works even on slow mobile data once the page has loaded. Download the result to Files or share it directly to e-mail or a messaging app.

Editing vs annotating vs converting

You want to…Best approach
Fix a few words or numbersEdit existing text here
Comment or mark up for reviewHighlight, shapes, arrows and pen
Rewrite whole sections or reflow paragraphsConvert to Word, edit, convert back
Hide sensitive information permanentlyRedact PDF
Fill in a form with fieldsFill PDF Form

Choosing the right approach saves time: direct editing is perfect for targeted fixes and keeps the original design intact, while converting to Word is better when the text has to flow differently, for example when adding several new paragraphs.
