How to: Pomodoro Timer

  1. Type what you are working on (optional) and press Start.
  2. Focus until the alarm, then take the break it gives you.
  3. Repeat – every fourth break is a long one. Download your session log at the end.

Big tasks are easier when you only have to focus for the next 25 minutes. Fileopia’s Pomodoro timer runs the classic cycle of focused work and short breaks, with a longer break every four rounds, and lets you adjust every duration. A sound and optional desktop notification tell you when to switch, auto-start keeps the rhythm going, and a simple log records each completed session and the task you worked on – all stored privately in your browser.

Tips for best results

How the technique works

Choose a task, set the timer for a focus period and work on nothing else until it rings. Then take a short break of about five minutes. After four focus periods, take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. The fixed end time makes it easier to start (“just 25 minutes”) and to resist distractions, while the regular breaks prevent fatigue. Counting completed sessions also gives you a realistic sense of how long tasks take.

Customising your cycle

Twenty-five minutes is a starting point, not a rule. Many people prefer 45 or 50-minute focus blocks for deep creative work and shorter ones for tedious tasks. Set the focus, short-break and long-break lengths and how many rounds come before a long break; the timer remembers them on this device. Auto-start moves straight into the next phase, which suits some people, while others prefer to start each session deliberately.

Notifications and the session log

The timer plays a soft tone when a phase ends. Enable desktop notifications to see an alert even when the tab is hidden behind other windows – your browser will ask for permission once. Each completed focus session is added to a log with the time and task label, which you can download as CSV for a timesheet, a study diary or simply the satisfaction of seeing your progress.
