How to: Online Stopwatch
- Press Start to begin timing.
- Press Lap to record split times without stopping.
- Pause, reset or download the lap list.
A stopwatch is one of the most-used tools on any phone, but a large, clear one on a computer or projector is surprisingly handy. Fileopia’s online stopwatch shows big, readable digits, records unlimited laps with split and total times, goes full screen with one click, and keeps perfect time even when the tab is in the background. It is free, works offline and needs no app.
Common uses
- Time laps, intervals and sprints at training.
- Measure how long tasks really take for productivity tracking.
- Time speeches, debate rounds and presentations.
- Run science experiments and classroom races.
- Time cooking steps or game turns.
Tips for best results
- Use laps to compare rounds – the split shows each lap alone.
- Full screen makes the time readable from across a room.
- Download laps to paste into a training log or spreadsheet.
- Keep the screen awake on a phone during long sessions.
- Open a second tab for a second stopwatch.
Split and lap times
Each time you press Lap, the stopwatch records two numbers: the lap (split) time since the previous lap, and the total elapsed time. Splits show consistency – a runner whose 400 m laps read 1:32, 1:31, 1:40 knows exactly where they slowed down. Totals show overall progress. The list grows downwards with the latest lap highlighted and can be downloaded as plain text.
Why browser stopwatches can drift – and this one does not
Browsers reduce timer activity in background tabs to save battery. A stopwatch that simply adds 10 ms on every tick falls behind when that happens. This one stores the moment you pressed Start and computes elapsed time from the high-resolution clock whenever it redraws, so switching tabs or a slow device never affects the result.
Using a stopwatch for productivity
Time tracking reveals where your day goes. Start the stopwatch when you begin a task and stop it when you switch; record each in a lap. After a few days you will see which tasks take longer than you estimate. Combine it with the pomodoro timer on this site for focused sessions, or the to-do list to plan your next task. Everything stays on your device.
