Common uses

Tips for best results

Getting small, smooth GIFs

GIF is an old format limited to 256 colours per frame, so file size grows quickly. The three settings that matter most are width, frame rate and length. A 480 px wide, 12 fps, 4-second clip is usually a few megabytes – fine for chats, docs and emails.

GIF or MP4?

Many platforms convert uploaded GIFs to video anyway. Use GIF where autoplay without controls is essential (emails, README files, some forums) and MP4 when the platform supports video, as it is far smaller.

Make a GIF from any video clip

Reaction GIFs, product demos, tutorial snippets, funny moments from your phone – GIFs play automatically and loop everywhere, from chat apps to documentation and e-mail. Fileopia's Video to GIF converter turns a part of any MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video into an animated GIF. Choose where it starts and how long it lasts, set the frame rate and width, speed it up or slow it down, make it loop forever, play once or bounce back and forth like a boomerang, and add a caption in classic meme style.

It all happens in your browser, so the video is not uploaded – no waiting for a 200 MB upload, no file size cap and no watermark.

How to convert a video to GIF

Keeping GIFs small

GIF is an old format: it stores every frame as an image with up to 256 colours and compresses it relatively poorly. File size grows with width × height × number of frames. A 5-second clip at 480 px and 10 fps is usually 1–4 MB; the same clip at 800 px and 25 fps can exceed 20 MB.

UseWidthFPSLength
Chat reaction320–480 px102–4 s
Documentation / tutorial640–800 px10–155–15 s
Social post480 px153–6 s
E-mail newsletter480–600 px103–5 s
Smooth motion showcase480 px20–252–3 s

If the GIF is still too large, shorten it, reduce the width, or lower the frame rate. You can also compress it afterwards with Compress GIF.

Speed, loops and boomerangs

Speeding a clip up (2× or 4×) lets you show a longer action – a cooking step, a drawing, a software workflow – in a short GIF. Slowing it down (0.5×) makes fast moments dramatic. Boomerang mode plays the frames forward and then backward, producing the seamless back-and-forth loop popular on social media; it works best with short clips of 1–3 seconds. 'Play once' is useful in presentations and documentation where a looping animation would distract.

Captions

Type up to 80 characters and choose top or bottom. The text is drawn in bold white with a black outline so it stays readable on any background, and scales with the GIF width. Keep captions short – a few words read better in a looping animation than a sentence.

GIF or video?

GIFs are universally supported and autoplay everywhere, but a short MP4 is often ten times smaller at better quality. Many social networks actually convert uploaded GIFs to video. Use GIF when you need guaranteed autoplay without controls – in e-mail, chat, GitHub READMEs, wikis and documentation. Use MP4 for longer clips, or convert back with GIF to MP4.

Privacy

Every step happens inside your browser tab. The file is read from your disk, decoded and re-encoded on your own device using the browser's built-in media engine (WebCodecs and Web Audio) and WebAssembly, and the result goes straight to your downloads folder. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored on a server and there is no queue – so family videos, interviews, voice memos, meetings and unreleased content never leave your computer or phone. Large files are not slowed down by your upload speed either: a 1 GB video starts processing instantly instead of after a ten-minute upload.
