How to: Image to Base64

  1. Upload one or more images.
  2. Choose the output format: data URI, raw Base64, HTML, CSS, Markdown or JSON.
  3. Copy each result or download all as a text file.

Embedding an image as Base64 puts the picture directly inside HTML, CSS, JSON or Markdown, so there is no separate file to host. Developers use it for small icons, email templates, test fixtures and API payloads. Drop in any number of images and get a ready-to-paste snippet for each, together with the size increase, so you can decide whether embedding makes sense.

Tips for best results

Anatomy of a data URI

A data URI has three parts: the data: prefix, the MIME type such as image/png, and the Base64 text after ;base64,. Browsers treat it exactly like an image URL, so it can go anywhere a link to an image would – the src of an img tag, a CSS url() or a Markdown image. The MIME type comes from your file, so the browser knows how to decode it.

Batch conversion

Upload several images at once to convert a whole icon set. Each image gets its own copy button and preview, and the download contains all snippets separated by blank lines, ready for documentation or code reviews.

Safe for private assets

Encoding uses the browser's FileReader, so unreleased designs and internal screenshots never leave your machine.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Base64 larger than the image

Base64 represents every 3 bytes of the file with 4 text characters, so the encoded text is about 33% larger than the original image. That is the trade-off for embedding images directly in code.

When should I avoid Base64 images

Large photos are better served as normal image files, which browsers can cache separately. Base64 works best for small icons, logos, email images and single-file HTML documents.

Is Image to Base64 really free?

Yes. Every tool on Fileopia is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
