How to: Compress Image to KB
- Upload one or more images.
- Enter the target size in KB and choose JPG or WEBP.
- Download images that are at or just below your target size.
Job portals, university applications, government websites and exam registrations often reject photos and scans larger than a fixed size such as 50 KB or 200 KB. Ordinary compressors make you guess the quality setting. Here you type the size you need and the compressor finds the best quality that fits automatically, for one image or a whole batch.
Common uses
- Meet photo and signature size limits on application and exam forms.
- Attach images to emails or chat apps with strict size caps.
- Upload product photos to marketplaces with file limits.
- Reduce scans of ID documents for online verification.
Tips for best results
- Crop away borders first – fewer pixels means better quality at the same size.
- Set a maximum width when the portal also limits pixel dimensions.
- Use KB (1024 bytes) for most forms; choose kB (1000 bytes) only if the site says so.
- WEBP gives better quality per KB if the site accepts it.
KB versus kB
Strictly, 1 kB is 1,000 bytes and 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes, but most websites and operating systems call 1,024 bytes a KB. The default uses 1,024, so a 50 KB target means at most 51,200 bytes. If a form rejects the file by a whisker, switch the unit or enter a slightly lower target.
Quality first, then size
Lowering JPEG quality removes fine detail that the eye barely notices, while shrinking dimensions makes everything smaller. The compressor therefore keeps your original resolution as long as quality stays at an acceptable level and only scales down when necessary, reporting the final quality and dimensions for each image.
Your files stay local
Compression runs in your browser; photos of IDs and certificates are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions
How does it hit an exact size
The tool tries many JPEG or WEBP quality levels using a binary search and keeps the highest quality that fits under your limit. If even low quality is too large, it gradually reduces the resolution until the file fits.
What if a form needs a minimum size too
Some portals ask for a photo between, for example, 20 and 50 KB. Tick the fill option and a JPG that came out far below the target is padded with a harmless comment block to about 95% of the limit, without changing the image.
Is Compress Image to KB really free?
Yes. Every tool on Fileopia is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Fileopia processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Fileopia works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
