Tips for best results

How autosave works

Each time you type, the note is written to localStorage, a small storage area your browser keeps for every website. When you return to the page in the same browser on the same device, the text is restored instantly. Because it never touches a server, it is fast and private, but it is also tied to that browser: notes do not appear on your phone if you wrote them on a laptop, and they are removed if you clear site data.

Privacy on shared computers

Anyone who uses the same browser profile can open the page and see your note. On a library, school or office computer, either use a private window – which discards the note when closed – or press “Clear” when you finish. For sensitive information such as passwords or medical details, a dedicated encrypted app or password manager is safer than any notepad.

Plain text versus rich text

The notepad stores plain text, which is the most portable format there is: it opens in every editor, pastes cleanly into email and chat, and never carries hidden formatting. Pasting formatted text from a web page or document strips the fonts and colours, which is a handy trick on its own. If you like headings and lists, write in Markdown syntax and download as .md for apps that render it.
