How to: Currency Converter
- Enter an amount and pick the currency you have.
- Pick the currency you want – the result and a quick table appear instantly.
- Download all rates for your base currency as a CSV if you need them.
Whether you are pricing a product for overseas customers, budgeting a trip or checking an invoice in a foreign currency, you need a quick, honest conversion. Fileopia’s currency converter uses the official daily reference rates of the European Central Bank for more than 30 major currencies, shows the date of the rate, and tells you plainly that banks and card providers add their own margin. There is no account, no tracking of what you convert, and the calculation runs in your browser.
Common uses
- Estimate what a hotel, flight or tour priced in euros or dollars will cost you.
- Convert a freelance invoice or salary offer into your home currency.
- Compare product prices across online stores in different countries.
- Prepare a multi-currency price list for an online shop.
- Check the rate your bank or exchange bureau offers against the reference rate.
Tips for best results
- Use ⇄ Swap to reverse the direction instantly.
- Rates are cached for an hour, so repeated conversions are instant and work briefly offline.
- Download the CSV to get every rate for your chosen base currency in one spreadsheet.
- Remember that weekends and holidays show the last working day’s rate.
- For large transfers, compare specialist transfer services – their margin is often far smaller than a bank’s.
Reference rates versus the rate you pay
The ECB reference rate is a mid-market rate: halfway between buying and selling prices on the interbank market, fixed once a day. It is ideal for estimates, accounting and comparison. When you actually exchange money, the provider adds a spread or fee – typically 0.5–1% for transfer specialists, 2–4% for many banks and cards, and more at airport kiosks. Comparing their quote with the reference rate shows you exactly how much the conversion is costing you.
Which currencies are covered
The ECB publishes rates for around 30 currencies including the US dollar, British pound, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, Chinese yuan, Indian rupee, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Singapore dollars, Scandinavian and Central European currencies, the South African rand, Brazilian real, Mexican peso, Korean won and several Asian currencies. Currencies the ECB does not publish – such as many African, Middle-Eastern or Latin-American currencies and all cryptocurrencies – are deliberately not shown rather than estimated.
Cross rates explained
Because the ECB quotes everything against the euro, a rate such as GBP to INR is calculated as a cross rate: pounds to euros, then euros to rupees. Frankfurter performs this rebasing for you, so the figure you see is mathematically consistent with the official euro rates. Small differences from other websites usually come from timing – many sites show live, minute-by-minute market prices, while reference rates are fixed once per business day.

Frequently asked questions
Where do the exchange rates come from?
From the European Central Bank’s euro foreign exchange reference rates, published every working day around 16:00 CET, delivered through the free, open-source Frankfurter API. The rate date is always shown.
Is my amount sent anywhere?
No. Your browser downloads the public rate table and does the multiplication itself; the amount you type never leaves the page.
How often are rates updated?
Once per working day, shortly after the ECB publishes around 16:00 Central European Time. There are no updates on weekends or TARGET holidays.
Can I use these rates for my accounts?
ECB reference rates are widely used for accounting and statistics, but check what your tax authority or auditor requires.
Why is my bank’s rate different?
Banks add a margin to the mid-market rate. The difference between their rate and the reference rate is what you pay for the exchange.
