How to: Ringtone Maker

  1. Choose a song or audio file.
  2. Set the start time, length and fade, using the waveform as a guide.
  3. Download as MP3 (Android) or M4R (iPhone) and set it as your ringtone.

Your favourite chorus makes a much better ringtone than the default marimba. Fileopia’s ringtone maker lets you pick exactly which part of a song plays, add a soft fade so it does not start abruptly, and save it in the right format for your phone: MP3 for Android and most other phones, or M4R for iPhone. The audio is cut and encoded inside your browser, so your music library is never uploaded.

Tips for best results

Setting a ringtone on Android

Copy the MP3 to your phone (download it directly on the phone, or transfer it by cable or cloud storage). Then open Settings → Sound & vibration → Phone ringtone, tap the plus or “Add” button and pick the file. On some phones you first need to move it to the Ringtones folder with the Files app. Many Android phones also let you assign a ringtone to an individual contact from the contact’s menu.

Setting a ringtone on iPhone

Apple only allows custom ringtones added through a computer or GarageBand. On a Mac, open Finder, connect your iPhone, select it and drag the .m4r file onto the device; on Windows use iTunes or Apple Devices. Alternatively, save the file to Files on the iPhone, import it into GarageBand, then use Share → Ringtone. Once added, it appears in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Ringtone.

Choosing the perfect clip

Ringtones work best when they are recognisable within a second or two and not too bass-heavy, since phone speakers are small. Choose a section with a clear melody or vocal, start right on the beat, and use a short fade-out so the loop is smooth when the phone keeps ringing. Only use music you own or have the right to use; ringtones are for personal use.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a ringtone be?

iPhone ringtones must be 40 seconds or less (30 s is typical). Android accepts longer files, but 20–30 s is usually enough.

Why did I get an MP3 instead of M4R?

M4R is AAC audio, and some browsers cannot encode AAC. In that case the tool saves an MP3 and tells you; convert it on a computer or use it on Android.

Can I use a video as the source?

Yes, if your browser can decode its audio – MP4 and MOV usually work.

Does the ringtone loop?

Your phone loops it automatically while ringing; the fade-out keeps the loop smooth.

Is there an app to install?

No. Everything works in the browser on phones and computers.

Is Ringtone Maker really free?

Yes. Every tool on Fileopia is 100% free with no file limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Fileopia processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. Fileopia works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
