How to: Word to PDF
- Select your DOCX file.
- Click Start.
- Download the PDF.
PDF keeps your document looking the same on every device, which is why most forms and portals ask for it. Fileopia converts DOCX files to PDF inside your browser, so CVs and letters never leave your device.
Common uses
- Turn your CV or cover letter into a PDF before applying for jobs.
- Send letters or reports that must not be edited.
- Prepare documents for printing.
Tips for best results
- This beta keeps text, headings, bold, italic and lists; check documents with images or complex layout.
- For full-fidelity layout, Word's own Save as PDF is also an option.
Why send PDF instead of Word
Word documents can look different on another computer because of missing fonts or different software versions. A PDF preserves the layout, is harder to modify accidentally and is accepted by virtually every job portal and organisation.
Compatibility
DOCX files from Microsoft Word, Google Docs (downloaded as DOCX), LibreOffice and Pages exports are supported.
Why convert Word to PDF here
A Word document looks different on every computer: fonts get substituted, page breaks move and images drift. A PDF freezes the layout so that what you send is exactly what the reader sees – on Windows, macOS, a phone or a printer. That is why CVs, invoices, assignments, contracts and government forms are almost always requested as PDF.
Fileopia converts the .docx file inside your browser. The document is unzipped and laid out on your own device, and the finished PDF is produced locally. Your file never travels to a server, so confidential HR letters, client proposals or exam answers stay on your machine.
- Free batch conversion – drop several DOCX files at once and get one ZIP of PDFs. Smallpdf reserves batch processing for paid plans; here it is free and unlimited.
- Keeps the important parts – paragraphs, headings, bold/italic, lists, tables, images, page size and margins are carried across.
- No watermark, no daily limit – convert one file or a hundred, today and tomorrow.
- Works offline – once the page has loaded you can switch off Wi‑Fi and keep converting.
How to save a Word document as PDF without any website
If you have Microsoft Word installed, you can also choose File → Save As → PDF (Windows) or File → Export → PDF (Mac). Google Docs offers File → Download → PDF document, and LibreOffice has File → Export as PDF. Those are good options when the program is already open.
This tool is useful when you are on a computer without Office, on a Chromebook or phone, when you need to convert a whole folder of files in one go, or when you were sent a DOCX and just want a PDF quickly without installing anything.
Tips for a perfect PDF
- Use common fonts – Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman and similar fonts convert most faithfully. Rare decorative fonts may be replaced with a close match.
- Accept tracked changes first – comments and revision marks are not printed, so finalise the document in Word before converting.
- Check page size – A4 and US Letter are both supported; the PDF uses the size set in the document.
- Large images – very high-resolution photos make big PDFs. Run the result through Compress PDF to shrink it for e-mail.
- Old .doc files – Word 97–2003 .doc files are supported too. Their text and paragraphs are converted in your browser; for complex layouts with images, save as .docx first for the most faithful result.
Common uses
- Sending a CV or cover letter that looks identical for every recruiter.
- Submitting assignments and theses to portals that only accept PDF.
- Turning a batch of generated letters or invoices into PDFs in one go.
- Archiving signed-off documents so nobody can accidentally edit them.
- Preparing a document for signing with Sign PDF or combining it with others using Merge PDF.
What happens to your document
Everything runs in JavaScript inside the browser tab. The DOCX is read from your disk into memory, converted, and the PDF is offered as a download. Closing the tab discards everything. There is no account, no cookie-based tracking of your files and no copy kept anywhere – you can verify this by disconnecting from the internet after the page loads.
Word to PDF on Windows, Mac, Chromebook and phone
Because the converter is a web page, it behaves the same everywhere. On a Windows PC or Mac it saves you opening Word just to export. On a Chromebook, where Microsoft Office desktop apps are not available, it gives you a faithful PDF in seconds. On Android or iPhone, open the DOCX from your e-mail or Files app, convert it here, and share the PDF straight back – handy when a portal or recruiter insists on PDF and you are away from your desk.
