UPC-A structure
A UPC-A barcode has 12 digits: a company prefix assigned by GS1 US, an item reference you choose and a final check digit. It is printed with the digits underneath so cashiers can type them if scanning fails.
Printing guidelines
The nominal size is about 37.3 × 25.9 mm (1.47 × 1.02 in); it can be scaled roughly 80–200%. Print dark bars on a light background, keep the quiet zones clear and avoid red bars, which many scanners cannot read.
UPC vs EAN
UPC-A is mainly used in the US and Canada; EAN-13 is used elsewhere. Modern retail scanners read both, and a UPC-A can be represented as an EAN-13 by adding a leading zero.
