Why exact definitions matter
Since 1959 the inch, foot, yard, pound and other imperial units have been defined exactly in metric terms. This converter uses those exact definitions, so results match engineering references rather than rounded rules of thumb.
Categories included
Length, mass, temperature, area, volume (including US and UK gallons, which differ), speed, data storage, pressure, energy and large-number units. Type in any field and every other unit updates instantly.
Grams to ounces for cooking, post and shopping
Type a weight in grams and get it in ounces immediately, along with pounds, kilograms, milligrams and other mass units. For weights of a pound or more the converter also gives a pounds-and-ounces line, the way US recipes and baby weights are written. The swap button turns it into an ounces-to-grams converter.
One avoirdupois ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, so 1 g = 0.035274 oz.
The formula
ounces = grams ÷ 28.3495
ounces = grams × 0.035274
grams = ounces × 28.3495
For pounds and ounces: divide the ounces by 16 – the whole number is pounds and the remainder is ounces. 500 g = 17.64 oz = 1 lb 1.6 oz.
Worked examples
- 100 g = 3.53 oz.
- 250 g pack of butter = 8.82 oz (US sticks are 4 oz / 113 g).
- 500 g of pasta = 17.64 oz = 1 lb 1.6 oz.
- 30 g serving of cereal = 1.06 oz.
- 1 kg of flour = 35.27 oz = 2 lb 3.3 oz.
- A 28 g letter = just under 1 oz.
- A 1 oz gold coin is a troy ounce = 31.10 g (see below).

Ounces vs fluid ounces
An ounce (oz) measures weight; a fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume. They match only for water and similar liquids – 1 US fl oz of water weighs about 1.04 oz (29.6 g). A cup of flour weighs around 120–130 g (4.2–4.6 oz), while a cup of sugar weighs about 200 g (7 oz). For baking, weighing in grams is more accurate than using cups. If a recipe gives fluid ounces, use the unit converter volume category instead.
Troy ounces for gold and silver
Precious metals are priced per troy ounce, which is 31.1034768 g – about 10% heavier than the ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 g. A 1 kg gold bar is 32.15 troy ounces but 35.27 ordinary ounces. In India, gold is also weighed in tola (11.66 g) and grams; the weight converter includes tola. When comparing gold prices, always check which ounce is meant.
Common kitchen amounts
| Ingredient | Typical US measure | Grams | Ounces |
|---|---|---|---|
| Butter | 1 stick | 113 | 4 |
| Flour (all-purpose) | 1 cup | 125 | 4.4 |
| Granulated sugar | 1 cup | 200 | 7.1 |
| Brown sugar (packed) | 1 cup | 220 | 7.8 |
| Rice (uncooked) | 1 cup | 185 | 6.5 |
| Cheese (grated) | 1 cup | 100 | 3.5 |
| Chocolate chips | 1 cup | 170 | 6 |
| Honey | 1 tablespoon | 21 | 0.74 |
Cup weights vary with how the ingredient is packed, so treat these as typical values.
Quick mental estimate
Divide grams by 30 for a rough ounce figure: 300 g ≈ 10 oz (exact 10.58 oz). For the reverse, ounces × 30 ≈ grams, then subtract 5%: 8 oz × 30 = 240, minus 12 = 228 g (exact 226.8 g).
Where the ounce comes from
The ounce derives from the Roman uncia, one twelfth of a Roman pound – the same word that gives us 'inch'. The avoirdupois system, with 16 ounces to the pound, was adopted for general goods in England in the 14th century, while the troy system was kept for precious metals and medicines. The international avoirdupois ounce has been exactly 28.349523125 g since 1959.
Postage and parcels
Postal services in the US price letters by the ounce (a standard letter stamp covers up to 1 oz, 28.35 g), while most other postal services use grams (for example 0–100 g bands). A typical sheet of A4 or Letter paper weighs about 5 g, so a letter with four sheets and an envelope is around 25–30 g – right on the 1 oz limit. Weigh before posting, and round up when the scale shows a value close to a band boundary.
Grams to ounces for coffee and tea
Specialty coffee recipes often call for 15–18 g of coffee per 250 ml cup (about 0.5–0.6 oz). A standard espresso uses 18 g (0.63 oz) of ground coffee for a double shot. Loose-leaf tea is typically 2–3 g (about 0.1 oz) per cup.
