Free Tamil OCR for images and scanned PDFs – recognised on your own device.
Read Tamil text from any picture
Photos of printed Tamil pages, screenshots, scanned letters and certificates contain text you cannot select or search. Fileopia's Tamil OCR reads the Tamil script with the Tesseract engine, running inside your browser, and returns plain, editable Unicode text – for example “தமிழ் உலகின் மிகத் தொன்மையான மொழிகளில் ஒன்றாகும்.”. You can also get a searchable PDF that keeps the original page and hides the recognised text underneath. Nothing is uploaded: the engine and the Tamil language data are loaded into the page and run on your own device.
How to use it
- Drop images or a scanned PDF (JPG, PNG, HEIC, TIFF, WebP, PDF).
- Check that the document language is Tamil; add English as the second language if the page mixes both.
- Choose text, searchable PDF, or both.
- Click Start. The first run downloads the language model once; it is cached afterwards.
Tips for accurate Tamil OCR
- Tamil letters carry small marks – the pulli dot (்) and the vowel signs (ெ, ே, ை, ா, ி). Scan or photograph at 300 DPI so they stay visible.
- Avoid heavy JPEG compression and WhatsApp-forwarded copies of copies; they smear the dots and signs the model relies on.
- Add English as the second language if the page mixes Tamil with English words, numbers or brand names.
- Old newspaper print, decorative fonts and handwriting are much harder than clean book or document print – proofread names and numbers.
Common uses
- Digitise printed Tamil books, magazines, school notes and government notices.
- Make scanned Tamil PDFs searchable with an invisible text layer.
- Copy Tamil text from a screenshot or a photo of a signboard so you can search it or translate it.
- Extract Tamil text from land records, certificates and old letters for typing up.
About Tamil text output
Tamil Unicode text from the OCR is cleaned up after recognition: stray zero-width joiners that the Tamil model inserts after the pulli are removed, so the text you copy matches what you would type and pastes correctly into Word, Google Docs and WhatsApp.
What it cannot do
OCR reads printed text. Handwriting, very decorative fonts, tiny or blurred text and photos taken at a steep angle are not recognised reliably – the result will contain mistakes you need to proofread. There is no layout reconstruction in the text output: you get the words in reading order, not the original columns and tables.
Private and free
There is no account, no daily limit and no watermark. Your files stay on your device, so it is safe for ID documents, medical records and legal papers. After the page and the Tamil model have loaded you can keep working offline.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an image to Tamil text?
Drop the image, make sure the language is Tamil, press Start and copy the text from the result box or download it as TXT.
Can it read a scanned Tamil PDF?
Yes. Drop the PDF and choose searchable PDF, text or both. Each page is rendered and recognised on your device; use the page range to process only some pages.
Is Tamil OCR free here?
Yes – no sign-up, no page limit and no watermark.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Recognition runs in your browser with the Tesseract engine; the only download is the language model, which is cached.
How accurate is it?
On clean printed Tamil text at 300 DPI it is usually very accurate, but accuracy drops on low-resolution photos, skewed pages, decorative fonts and handwriting. Always proofread names, numbers and dates.
Can it read Tamil mixed with English?

Is Tamil OCR really free?
Yes. Every tool on Fileopia is free to use with no account required and no watermarks; practical file limits vary by tool and device. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Fileopia processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Fileopia works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
