How to: Translate PDF
- Add a PDF, Word (.docx) or text file.
- Choose the source and target languages.
- Click Translate, then download the translated PDF or text.
Translate a PDF without uploading it
Most online PDF translators send your document to a server. This one does not: the text is read from the PDF in your browser and translated on your device, either by the translator built into Chrome or by a small open-source model that runs inside the page. That makes it suitable for contracts, certificates, medical reports and other private papers. There is no account, no page limit and no watermark.
How to use it
- Drop a PDF, Word (.docx) or text file. Scanned PDF? Tick “Run OCR first”.
- Leave the source on Auto-detect or pick it; choose the target language.
- Optionally enter a page range such as 1-3,5.
- Click Translate. The first run of a language pair downloads its model (≈110 MB) once.
- Download the translated PDF, the text file, or both.
Languages and where they work
| Languages | Directions | Where | Download |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Czech, Hungarian | English → these, and these → English | Any browser | ≈110 MB per direction, cached |
| Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Thai | These → English only (as a target they need Chrome) | Any browser | ≈110 MB, cached |
| Romanian | English → Romanian only | Any browser | ≈110 MB, cached |
| Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi | Both directions with English | Chrome on desktop (built-in translator) | Language pack downloaded by Chrome |
| Greek, Hebrew, Bulgarian, Croatian, Norwegian, Slovak, Slovenian, Lithuanian | Both directions | Chrome on desktop | Language pack downloaded by Chrome |
| Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati, Punjabi and others | Not available | – | No free, permissively licensed model could be verified |
Two engines, picked automatically
When Chrome's built-in translator supports the language pair it is used: no model download from this site and generally better quality for Indian languages. Otherwise the page uses Opus-MT, small open translation models (CC-BY-4.0) run with transformers.js and ONNX Runtime in your browser. Pairs that do not include English are translated through English, which takes two models and loses some precision. You can force either engine in the options.
Quality: what to expect
Machine translation. Everyday prose between European languages is usually clear; Hindi and Arabic are usable for gist; names, numbers, legal wording, idioms and technical terms need checking. Sentences are translated one at a time, so context between sentences is not used. For anything official, have a human review the result.
What the translated PDF looks like
The output is a new, clean A4 PDF with the translated text in reading order, one source page after another, in a font that covers the target script (including Devanagari, Arabic right-to-left and Chinese). The original layout, images, tables and columns are not reproduced; if you need them, use the plain-text download and your own template.
Speed and large files
Translation runs on your CPU, roughly a second per sentence once the model is loaded. A 10-page document takes a few minutes; keep the tab open and use the page range for long files. The model download happens once and is reused.
Scanned documents
If the PDF is a scan, tick “Run OCR first”. The OCR language follows the source language you picked (so choose it explicitly for Tamil, Hindi and other non-English scans). Check the recognised text on very poor scans before relying on the translation.
What it cannot do
- Malayalam, Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi are not available: no free, permissively licensed in-browser model gave usable results.
- Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali and Marathi need Chrome on desktop (version 138 or newer).
- It does not keep the original layout, and it does not translate text inside images unless you OCR first.

Your files never leave your device
Translate PDF runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files are read from your disk into this tab, processed in memory and saved straight back to your downloads folder – they are never uploaded to Fileopia or any third party.
- Test it yourself: once this page has loaded, switch off Wi‑Fi or mobile data and run the tool – it keeps working.
- Check the network: open your browser’s developer tools (F12 → Network) while processing; you will see no file upload requests.
- Nothing to delete: close the tab and the data is gone – there is no server copy, no retention period and no account.
File tools designed for local processing work in your browser. Practical file-size and performance limits depend on the selected tool, browser and device. Some features need an internet connection to load code or data.

Frequently asked questions
Is the translation done on my device?
Yes. The text is extracted in your browser and translated either by the translator built into Chrome or by a small open model (Opus-MT) that is downloaded once and runs in the page. Your document is not sent to a server.
Which languages are supported?
Any browser: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian (English → Romanian), plus translation from Portuguese, Polish, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Thai into English. Chrome on desktop adds Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi and more through its built-in translator. Malayalam is not available.
How big is the download?
The on-device model is about 110 MB for each direction (a pair that does not include English uses two models, because English is the pivot). It is cached by your browser, so the next translation starts immediately. Chrome's built-in translator downloads its own small language pack.
How good is the translation?
Good enough to understand a document and to draft from, not good enough to publish unchecked. The open models are small: names, numbers, idioms and technical terms can be wrong, and very long sentences may be shortened. Always review important translations.
Does the translated PDF keep my layout?
No. The translated text is set in new A4 pages in the original reading order; images, tables and columns are not reproduced. You can also download the translation as plain text.
Can it translate a scanned PDF?
Yes – tick “Scanned PDF? Run OCR first”. OCR uses the source language you chose.
How long does it take?
Roughly a second per sentence on a modern laptop after the model has loaded, so a 10-page document takes a few minutes. Use the page range for long files.
Is Translate PDF really free?
Yes. Every tool on Fileopia is free to use with no account required and no watermarks; practical file limits vary by tool and device. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Fileopia processes your files directly in your browser using JavaScript. Your documents never leave your device, so they stay completely private.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Fileopia works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux.
